Turning Down the Heat: Soft Washing a Heavily Infested Newtown Roof
The aluminum shake roof at this Newtown home on Oʻahu had become heavily infested with organic growth, turning the surface dark and causing it to absorb a significant amount of heat. This not only affected the appearance of the home but also contributed to higher interior temperatures and unnecessary stress on the roofing system. The homeowner was looking for a non-abrasive, cost-effective solution that would safely remove the buildup without damaging the aluminum shakes or protective coatings, while also providing results that would last for years rather than just a few months.
Aluminum shake can be a tricky roof to clean. Careful consideration must be taken to avoid stepping on the roof’s ridge caps, hips, and valleys, to prevent crushing the roof’s non-foam insulated roof shakes.
Soft washing was the ideal approach. Using low-pressure application, specialized cleaning solutions, and gentle scrubbing, the organic growth was gently broken down and removed without any abrasive force. This restored the roof’s original brightness and reflectivity, helping it shed heat more effectively and improving overall energy efficiency. Unlike pressure washing, soft washing treats the root system of the growth, allowing the results to last significantly longer and reducing the chance of rapid regrowth. The end result was a cooler, cleaner roof and long-term protection that met the client’s goal of a durable, cost effective, and non-damaging solution.
